The Coalition of Geriatric Services (COGS) is a non-profit organization of public agencies, private companies and individuals who provide services to older adults. COGS currently has over 250 individuals representing 135 organizations from the Baltimore/Washington area. Its mission is to enhance the quality of living for older adults through advocacy, provider networking, education and visibility.
A volunteer board of directors and a variety of committees plan program meetings, monitor legislation, develop membership and provide education information to its members and the community at large. COGS has been widely recognized for its effectiveness in linking business and service providers with individuals in search of special services beneficial to older adults, or who need help in developing new services.
COGS also has a speakers bureau available to address community groups and business groups on important Aging issues. |

According to the IRS case-manager who handled COGS' application, the Coalition was the first organization of its type to receive such recognition. The IRS case manager explained that considerably more time was given to evaluation of our application because there were no "precedents" within IRS records with which to compare criteria. The Coalition thus became a precedent for future like organizations.
The first Board of Directors met at Taylor Manor Hospital Center in Ellicott City but moved shortly after founding to the Florence Bain Senior Center, then to Harmony Hall Retirement Community for a year or so. The Visiting Nurses Association in the Dorsey Hall Village Center hosted Board Meetings for a year or so until the Boards' last move to Heartlands Retirement Community, for the longest period of time and where it now meets.
