Topic: Elder Financial Exploitation: The Crime of the 21st Century
Speaker: Pfc. Andre Lingham, Howard County Police
About Our Event: It is estimated that seniors are scammed out of 36 billion dollars per year in financial exploitation. Such exploitation occurs whenever older adults are deprived of their property by improper means and it commonly includes fraud, theft or deceptive behavior. Often the perpetrator of this behavior is a family member, caregiver or someone who has a relationship of trust with the older adults. Increasingly, older adults are also targeted for exploitation by strangers using various types of scams and frauds. This presentation will cover the different types of scams and frauds that are targeting seniors and the best ways to minimize them being victimized.
